The Southern Cayuga Central School District Board of Education will meet next week to discuss how to respond to the rejection of its budget proposal by voters earlier this week.
The board has called a special budget study meeting for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the district's planetarium classroom. The meeting is open to the public and a comment period will be included.
On Tuesday, Southern Cayuga voters turned down the district's $14.4 million budget, which carried a 12.49-percent tax levy increase.
The budget was defeated by 41 votes, leaving the school board with two options: go directly into a contingency budget or hold another vote. With a second vote, the board could modify its original budget proposal or offer the same plan.
The budget that was voted on would have resulted in taxpayers paying up to $16.61 per $1,000 assessed property value.
Cardamone originally presented the board with a budget asking for a 10.2-percent tax levy increase, but increased the overall spending proposal after board members asked him to add a few things to the budget proposal.
