POPLAR RIDGE - The Watkins Glen softball team arrived late to play Southern Cayuga on Friday, and never caught up.

Southern Cayuga third baseman Amanda Collier (3) receives a throw from catcher Johanna Ryan before tagging out Watkins Glen baserunner Natasha Evans as shortstop Colleen Lukas (23) backs up the throw in the top of the second inning of the Chiefs 5-2 win.
The Senecas, who arrived 45 minutes late after detouring to drop off their tennis team at Moravia, fell behind 3-0 after one inning before eventually losing 5-2.
Ashley Lehtonen and Moriah Jacobson combined for nine strikeouts in the win.
"We knew they had good pitching," said Watkins Glen coach Jim Scott. "We knew they played well defensively the last time we played them, and we were just hoping that we could play well defensively. We've played a little weak defensively the past couple games, so we were hoping to be a little more solid. We started off a little slow but we finished off tremendous."
The Chiefs (10-5) would've scored later on, but the Senecas' (3-11) defense clamped down.
"They made their plays," said Chiefs' coach Dave Hewitt. "We hit some bombs and they caught them."
Southern Cayuga also had a nice day in the field, only letting three hits through the gaps.
"Our defense was really sound again and that helped us a lot," said second baseman Molly Osterhoudt.
Offensively, the Chiefs pelted Seneca pitcher Samantha Baker with eight hits, two in the first.
Osterhoudt started Southern Cayuga off with a single, and Colleen Lukas reached on fielder's indifference.
Both reached home when Watkins Glen's Kristen Campbell couldn't handle Traci Hewitt's pop-up to center. Hewitt later scored on Kaitlyn Bradley's single.
"We just hit really well and got people on bases and tried to bring them home," Bradley said of the Chiefs' play in the first.
In the top of the second, Ashley Evans reached on an error, was moved over to third on a Natasha Evans single, and was driven home by Ianthia Brown.
Evans scored while Brown stole second.
Both teams failed to score until the fourth, when Osterhoudt and Lukas reached on singles.
Amanda Collier brought Osterhoudt home on a fielder's choice, and Lukas scored on Hewitt's sac fly.
It was quieter day for the Chiefs, who had double figures in hits the last time two schools played.
Southern Cayuga won the earlier contest 7-1.
Osterhoudt and Lukas each had two hits and two runs, Hewitt (run) and Bradley each had a hit and a RBI, and Nicole Reid and Johanna Ryan had one hit apiece.
Collier had one RBI.
Southern Cayuga is scheduled to play Weedsport in the first round of the Cayuga County Softball Tournament today.
