Time to unwind

AUBURN -- For more than a week, posters hung on the walls at East Middle School, reminding students to bring their parents to Family Fun Night.
But not too many parents took the risk of dying their hair green, or getting on the stage to belt out an out-of-tune rendition of their favorite song.

Back by popular demand, Family Fun Night gave students the opportunity to sing karaoke to their classmates, get a hair and nail makeover, learn karate and challenge their parents to a game of one-on-one basketball.

"Each time we put on the fun night, we get more students and parents in attendance," said Kellee Carroll, co-chairman of the East Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization. "For every fun night, the PTO plans something different each time. It's gotten so popular, my oldest son, Steven, came back to volunteer since he had so much fun at the fun night when he went to the middle school."

In brainstorming ways students could interact with their peers at school, the PTO wanted to try a family fun night instead of the traditional middle school dance.

The East Middle School PTO had a similar event earlier this year and thought of new entertainment to add for the semi-annual event.

For the second time around, students could conquer the Boy Scout rock-climbing course, make their own ice cream sundaes and learn how to perform hip-hop dance steps from instructor Sean McLeod.

Carroll, who has been with the East Middle School PTO for four years, would like to keep the new tradition of having two fun nights per year in the future.

"If we can get them to do it, no problem. I would love to see two in the same year," she said.

While the rock-climbing wall and ice cream parlor were busy for most of the evening, Carroll noticed another trend.

"I thought the event the children enjoyed most was the nail and hair parlor. Many of the boys and girls were walking around school with their weird hairstyles," Carroll said. "It was neat that the guys got to go and do that stuff, too."
