FLEMING - Gerald I. Burger, 55, of 2642 Quick Silver Drive, Fleming, died unexpectedly Monday, April 25, 2005, in Auburn Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Burger was born in Auburn on May 30, 1949. He was the son of the late John "Otso" Burger and Lorraine Sanford Burger of Auburn. He attended local schools and later served with the Army during Vietnam. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, as a result of his heroic actions during his service in Vietnam.
He recently was instrumental in organizing reunions of the 199th Red Catchers, and locally was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1975. In the past, Mr. Burger had been employed with K-mart of Auburn for many years as an appliance manager. He was not only very proud of his service to his country, but of his service with the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1. He was a past president of the organization and former fire chief of the department. Though his health had declined due to injuries sustained in Vietnam, he continued to support the department during its many activities and functions.
He will be sadly missed by his fellow firefighters, veterans, friends and especially his loving family: His wife of 26 years, Cindy Walters Burger of Auburn; his four daughters, Jamey Burger DeWitt and her husband, Lee (Skeeter) Crossley of Auburn, Alicia Burger of Buffalo, Jacqueline and LIndsay Burger, both of Auburn; two grandsons, Christopher DeWitt and Conner Crossley. He is also survived by his mother, Lorraine Burger; and sisters, Sharon Burger, Kathie Taro and Kristine (Richard) March, all of Auburn; his brothers, Master Sergeant Karl (Carrie) Burger of North Carolina, now serving in Iraq, and John Burger of Boston; an aunt, Sister Marjorie Burger of Fairport; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, John Burger; a daughter, Lynn Marie; and a sister, Carol Davia.
Family prayer services will take place at 8:45 a.m. Friday, at the White Chapel Funeral Home, 197 South St., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, with military honors. Friends are invited to visit with his family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 28, at White Chapel.
His family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the Fleming Volunteer Fire Department, 6063 West Lake Road, Auburn, NY 13021, in memory of Gerald I. Burger.
