HIT: To the wide range of school-board choices Cato-Meridian Central School District voters will get this year.
Seven people are running for three vacant seats, an impressive total for a small district. Of course, the budget troubles in the district over the past year likely motivated some people to run, but that's the way the system should work.
The best elections are ones that give voters a diverse array of choices. This race certainly has the potential to do that, and we urge the candidates in the coming weeks to engage the public in a discussion about this district's future.

By 2011, the census bureau now estimates, Florida will overtake New York as the third most populous state in the union. The state's slow growth projection likely means the state will lose additional seats in Congress after the 2010 election, and by 2030, it could be down six seats.
This report is yet another reminder why upstate New York must figure out how to stop young professionals from leaving for other states.
MISS: Although Cayuga County suffered significant damages from flooding earlier this month, county officials failed to put together the necessary paperwork to secure financial aid in a timely fashion. As a result, 13 upstate New York counties received disaster relief from the federal government this week, but Cayuga County is not one of them.
