Saint Joseph's School continues to carry on the long and proud tradition of Catholic School education in the Auburn area. In support of our reading program, students were encouraged to read through the month of March in our "Hat's Off to Reading" challenge.
Students could earn a hat by reading the required books or chapters.
Teachers kept track of how many points students earned by hanging reading hats in the hallway. Each week students were informed of the number of points that had been earned by the school.
Highlights of the reading challenge included guest readers during our Morning Program, Reading Trivia, and Stop, Drop and Read.
Our own Student Services Club officers, Morgan Guinnip, Liz Latanyshyn and Kate Dellonte, read "On Noah's Ark."
Mrs. Carr from the Children's Room at Seymour Library read "Caps for Sale," and showed us some of her caps. Mr. Cosentino read "The Night Before Easter" and gave the students airplanes. Father Lape read and acted out "The Tortoise and the Hare," and he also brought his guitar so we could enjoy a sing along.
Every morning, along with the regular announcements we had Reading Trivia. Each question was about books or authors.
Students brought their guesses to the library each morning and at the end of the week, five winners were picked and received a special bookmark and pin.
Also throughout March the entire school participated in "Stop, Drop and Read. "Whenever the bell rang, everyone from students, teachers and even the principal were to stop what we were doing, find a comfortable place and read until we heard the bell again.
For every 400 hats earned by the students they also earned a day during "St. Joseph's Week" held April 11-15.
Monday was Sport Shirt Day. Everyone could wear a favorite sport shirt or favorite T-shirt.
Tuesday was Hat and Sneaker Day.
Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday. Students wore their clothes backwards, two different shoes and socks, stripes with polka dots and much more.
Thursday was Character Day and Game Day.
Students in kindergarten through grade three, dressed as their favorite book character or represented their favorite book character in some way or another.
The classes also got together and students read together. In grades four through eight students played their favorite table games in the afternoon. Games included chess, cards (poker), Clue, Kadoo and more.
Friday was for Book Bingo and Ice Cream Sundaes. Classes got to enjoy ice cream sundaes from our Soda Fountain Room, and the entire school played Bingo with books as prizes.
Our "Hat's Off to Reading" program was a huge success. The students' goal was to earn 2,000 hats. They earned more than 3,000 hats, that hang proudly in the halls of St. Joseph's School.
