A state-employed teacher at the Auburn Correctional Facility was arrested Wednesday for soliciting an inmate to kill an unidentified 28-year-old male.
Daniel P. Crosby, 40, of Standart Woods Apartments-Apt. A-9, 2 Schwartz Drive, Auburn, was taken into custody by the Auburn State Police Wednesday on a felony charge of second-degree criminal solicitation. A police report said the crime took place March 10.
The state Department of Correctional Services said it could not identify the inmate with whom Crosby is accused of negotiating to commit murder.
Crosby had taught pre-GED classes at the Auburn Correctional Facility since 1999, said Linda Foglia, DOCS' assistant public relations officer.
Crosby was being held Thursday in the Cayuga County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond following his arraignment in Auburn City Court Thursday.
Standing a floor below his father's residence on Thursday, Crosby's 16-year-old son, Mike, said the charge is false.
"My dad would never do that," he said.
"I never would have dreamed such a thing," said Crosby's neighbor, Marilyn Lepak. "He always seemed like a nice guy."
Crosby had been employed with DOCS since November 1994. Before starting work at the Auburn prison, he worked at the Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia, Foglia said.
DOCS has a lock-out order against Crosby from returning to work at Auburn Correctional Facility and will be seeking Crosby's dismissal from his $47,056 position, Foglia said.
