Donald V. 'Dinny' Day

AUBURN - Mr. Donald V. "Dinny" Day, 84, of Auburn, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in Auburn Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Day was a native of Auburn, born the son of William F. and Margaret Cunningham Day. He was a member of St. Alphonsus Church, the Holy Name Society and was a graduate of Holy Family High School, Class of 1938.

Mr. Day was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater in the signal aircraft warning battalion. He retired in 1986 from the NYS Department of Corrections. He was employed prior to that for 23 years, until 1968, at the Fleming Frozen Food Locker Plant, a family-owned business.

Mr. Day was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying Notre Dame and New York Giants football. He enjoyed playing golf and in 1992 scored a hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Highland Park Golf Club, where he has been a member for 17 years. Mr. Day enjoyed reading and playing cards as well, but will always be remembered for being a devoted husband and father, who absolutely adored his four girls.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol Jane Wildner Day of Auburn; four daughters, Patricia Ann Ross and her husband, Dr. William Ross, of California, Jeanne Marie Jongen and her husband, Josef, of Rochester, Kathleen Mary Lynn and her husband, Eric, of Johnson City, and Elizabeth Louise Stevens of Auburn; three grandchildren, Catherine Leah Rose, Ian James Lynn and Eric Lindsley Stevens; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is predeceased, along with his parents, by three sisters and two brothers, Mary D. Gould, Dorothy D. Kelly, Jane D. Pine, John J. Day, William F. Day Jr.; and a nephew, William F. Day III.

Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 14, at Farrell's Funeral Service Inc., 84 South St., Auburn. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 15, in St. Alphonsus Church, with the Rev. Louis Vasile, pastor of St. Alphonsus, as celebrant. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum, Fleming.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, or to the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York, in memory of Mr. Day.
