SENNETT - Serving more than 5,000 members, the YMCA-WEIU has been a premier health- and family-centered resource within the community for more than 125 years. In addition to fitness programs, they offer many programs that focus on health and social service needs as well.
At their annual luncheon meeting Thursday, "Telling Stories-Changing Lives," more than 90 members gathered in the banquet hall of Highland Park Golf Club to update past achievements and share plans for the future.

Bud Cooney was honored as Member of the Year, for leading a healthy lifestyle and his active participation in the YMCA as well as the community.

Various other members were honored for superior service and commitment to the YMCA-WEIU.

The luncheon included members reading stories and charing memories.

The Y isn't just a place to get healthy, wrote one member. It's a place to grow.

The Auburn YMCA, offers more than just a place for teenagers to hang out, wrote another. They offer a place for teenagers to learn that they can make a difference in the community.

One writer praised the Y staff and members for help getting through the aftermath of a terrible car accident.

Some of this past year's highlights include the Capitol Project, in which more than $800,000 was raised through donations for renovations made to the facility. These include a new multipurpose program area, renovated Men's Health Center, improved air handling in the auxiliary pool, improvements for the B-Gym, and rebuilt heating and control systems for the original building.

The attendance of the Y Camp has seen an increase this past summer, with success being attributed to equipment upgrades, family weekends and cleanup of the area.

"The YMCA-WEIU is more than just a place of fitness," said Larry Liberatore, president of the Auburn YMCA-WEIU board of directors. "It is a place of socializing within the community."

"We take pride in providing a variety of services to our community," executive director James Courtney added.
