SYRACUSE - Duane P. Truex Jr., 84, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2005at Community General Hospital.
Born in Auburn, he was a Syracuse resident for 47 years and was a member of the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church.
A decorated World War II veteran, he served in the European theatre in 1944. Truex attended Syracuse University following WWII and was an active member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He also sung with the American Legion chorus. Upon graduation he joined the Syracuse Supply Co., where he worked in management for 35 years.
An avid outdoorsman in his youth, he passed his love of skiing, hiking, camping, and water sports to his children.
He enjoyed spending summers at his cottage in Ontario, Canada, and a winter residence in Venice, Fla., with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Ricketts Truex; a sister, Ruth Truex Mills of Auburn; four children, Duane 3rd, Deborah, Diane and Donna; and 10 grandchildren, Adriane, D. Phillip, Sarah, Alexandra, David, Sean-Ryan and Colin-Patrick, Zach, Christian and Erin; and daughter-in-law, Cherie Long.
Duane Truex was a loyal and honest friend, a strong, loving, generous and giving father and husband. He was the wind beneath our wings, our guide, our confident, our strength and our role model. His physical presence in our daily lives will be sorely missed, but his indomitable spirit will live in us until the end of our days.
A public celebration of the life of Duane Truex Jr. will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church, 4797 Makyes Road.
A gathering of friends and family from 2 to 3 p.m. will precede the service.
Contributions in his memory may be made to the Onondaga Hill Presbyterian Church, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and the Leukemia Foundation.
