Authorities are investigating the theft of an automated teller machine from a Port Byron grocery store and gas station.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said the machine was likely stolen early Sunday morning, and it was possibly transported to Rochester in a truck stolen from its owner's driveway in Montezuma.
Unknown suspects forced entry into Ed and Jean's Market - a full-line grocery store with gas pumps - located at the corner of Route 31 and Route 38 in the village of Port Byron.
In the first major burglary and robbery to affect Ed and Jean's since it opened in 1972, Tom Moon, the current owner and the son of Ed and Jean commemorated in the store's name, found the glass broken on the sliding doors at the front of the store when he went to work at 4 a.m. prior to opening the store an hour later.
The ATM was stolen between 3:20 a.m. and 4:15 a.m., sheriff's officials said. The store closed at 10 the night before.
Moon said the ATM sat about 14 feet from the front door.
"I don't know if they put a chain around it and dragged it out or what," Moon said. "It's a clear getaway" between the ATM's location and the front door, Moon added.
Moon said he didn't know how much money had been in the ATM and that no other conspicuous items had been stolen from Ed and Jean's.
Moon said that despite the 18 security cameras in the store, the thieves were not caught on camera.
Unknown suspects also stole a white 1994 GMC Sierra pick-up truck from its owner's driveway on Route 90 in Montezuma sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday. The truck was used by its owner in a roofing and siding business.
The truck was recovered around 7:30 a.m. Monday within Rochester city limits. Numerous power tools and a stereo-CD player were reported stolen from the truck.
"Evidence with the vehicle leads us to believe that it was used in the ATM burglary," Cayuga County Sheriff Rob Outhouse said.
Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to call the sheriff's office's criminal investigations unit at 253-3902.
Detectives particularly are interested in interviewing anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the areas of the two thefts and anyone who may have seen the stolen truck while it was being driven Sunday morning.
