YMCA is a great place for kids

For many young people, athletics and physical activity isn't restricted to school. Kids are busy these days with school, clubs, jobs and other obligations. These kids and young adults find their release at the Auburn YMCA-WEIU with their friends during their free time.
One teenager, Tracey Marquez, a lifeguard at the YMCA, enjoys being able to come into work early directly after school. He finds it convenient to lift weights, run on the track, or play racquetball before his shift begins. Tracy also enjoys the social aspect of hanging out with co-workers and the other regulars he sees after school at the Y.

Some teenagers come to the Y in-between their organized sport schedules to touch up on some of their less practiced skills. Auburn Ice Hawk Hockey players JJ Foltz, Brad Murdock, Matt Festa, Stephen Komanecky and Cole Bardreau can be seen on the basketball courts as often as on the ice now that their season is winding down.

Recently, they all participated in a basketball tournament. Although they were not the most talented team, they put forth a great effort and had a great time in the process.

Jeff Hanno is a racquetball instructor at the Auburn YMCA who has seen his share of kids and young adults explore other interests aside form their daily interests. High school students Mike Fandrich, Victor Fandrich, and Kevin Muldoon have taken racquetball lessons Jeff for the past few years.

All three boys are dedicated to extra-curricular activities at school yet they have pursued improving their racquetball play through their teen years.

Jeff pointed out the boys have demanding schedules that include lacrosse, soccer and band practice. However, each teen has improved their game on the courts each Thursday. Jeff watches as the boys developed through the juniors program as well as participate in tournaments.

Only a few people out of many have been highlighted above. There are hundreds of youth members in and out of the Y every day. Whether people are playing pick-up basketball for fun in the gym or lifting weights for an upcoming football season, there are people of all sizes, shapes and abilities finding a place to play at the Auburn YMCA-WEIU.
