The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Auburn teenager in connection with vandalism discovered in November at a rural cemetery in Montezuma.
Sheriff Rob Outhouse said Friday his office has charged Jason E. Lofft, 17, of 7118 Nugent Road, with first-degree desecration of a cemetery, a felony.
Lofft is accused of tipping over and damaging numerous headstones at the Mentz Methodist Church Cemetery, located at the corner of Mentz-Church and McDonald roads. The damage, estimated at $1,000, was reported in November.
Outhouse said a break in the investigation took place in January, when Deputy Peter VanDitto developed new suspect information. The case was turned over to Detective Brian Schenck.
Lofft was arrested Thursday, arraigned in town of Montezuma court and released from county jail after posting $1,000 cash bail.
The sheriff's office believed he acted alone, but is asking anyone with additional information to call 253-3545.
