Finger Lakes wines made a strong showing at the Florida State Fair International Wine Competition held in Tampa last weekend.
The event signals the beginning of wine competition season across the country and the results posted by the New York wines could bode well for future contests.
The field included 1,228 wines from 20 states and several foreign countries and were judged "blind" by 21 wine experts from across the country. New York wineries received a total of 122 medals - 1 double gold, 8 gold, 49 silver and 64 bronze, and represented 67 percent of all wineries in the state.
Romulus's Swedish Hill represented the Finger Lakes well, taking home a "Best of Show Sparkling Wine," as well as a double gold for its Spumante Blush. Its sister winery, Goose Watch, nabbed a gold medal for its Golden Spumante sparkling wine.
The two won a total of 6 silver and 12 bronze medals for other entries.
Other area wineries taking home medals included Ch...teau Lafayette Reneau, Fox Run Vineyards, Lakewood Vineyards, Anthony Road Wine Company and Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars.
Cayuga County wineries Montezuma and Martin's Honey Farm & Meadery won four bronze medals between them.
