MORAVIA - Richard Foster Hawley, 81, of South-East-On-Owasco, Moravia, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, in the VA Medical Center in Bath, after a long illness.
Mr. Hawley was born Nov. 2, 1923, in Auburn, the son of the late Ralph W. Hawley Sr. and Emma Foster Hawley. He was a resident of Moravia most of his life.
He was a graduate of Moravia High School and the Pharmacy School of the University of Buffalo. He began his career in pharmacy with his father in Moravia in 1954 as R.W. Hawley & Son.
Following the death of his father in 1956, he continued the family business as Hawley's Rexall Drug Store. The pharmacy portion of the store was discontinued due to Richard's failing health in 2003.
Richard served in the Navy in both World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of Rowe-Churchill American Legion Post No. 710 of Moravia, and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of Moravia.
He is survived by a brother, Ralph W. Hawley Jr. of Moravia; three nieces, Darlene Rocco of Webster, Carolyn Hawley of Syracuse, and Edith Kramer of Dalton, Mass.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Winifred Cox Hawley; and a sister, Clara A. Green.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, in St. Matthew's Church, Church Street, Moravia. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Moravia, in the spring.
