Intensity carries Port Byron girls over Weedsport

PORT BYRON - The Port Byron girls basketball team let a three-point halftime lead slip away in the third quarter, but turned up the intensity and came away with a 49-36 win over Weedsport Thursday night at Port Byron High School.
"We made some adjustments, and our intensity rose," said Port Byron coach Mindy Gilbert. "We were able to capitalize on turnovers in the second half."

Courtney Dare led the Panthers (6-11) with 13 points, six steals and four assists. Molly Smith chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Mallory Jakaub added nine points and seven steals.

Sarah Lewis led the Warriors with five points.

Port Byron hosts Cato-Meridian on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jordan-Elbridge 35, Skaneateles 23

JORDAN - Rachel Graf scored 10 points to lead the Eagles.

Hillary Pundt led the visiting Lakers with eight points.

Skaneateles hosts Tully on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Union Springs 58, Lansing 36

UNION SPRINGS - The Wolves stayed a game ahead of Marathon in the IAC, Division III standings with their convincing win.

Pat Crowley led Union Springs (11-4, 7-1) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Also making contributions were Josh Tratt (14 points), Bryan McClary (13 points, six rebounds) and Sean Noonan (six points, six rebounds, seven assists).

The Wolves host Odessa-Montour on Saturday.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Weedsport 3, Port Byron 2

WEEDSPORT - The host Warriors qualified for the sectional playoffs with their five-game victory, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-21.

Co-captain Whitney Porter led Weedsport (8-6) with three aces, seven kills, two assists and three blocks, while co-captain Suzy Lynch had four aces, 11 kills and two assists.

Jessica James had four aces, three kills and 19 assists for the Warriors. Jessica Spingler had three aces and two kills, and Sarah James had two aces and three kills.

Auburn 3, Central Square 1

AUBURN - All but one game went down to the wire as the Maroons prevailed in four games, 25-16, 23-25, 31-29 26-24.

Emily Turner had 17 assists and six kills for Auburn (11-4).

Stephanie Ryan had eight kills, Courtney Miskell had seven aces, six assists and four kills, and Michelle Grassi had eight aces and played outstanding defense.

Auburn's junior varsity also won.

Auburn plays at Oswego on Wednesday.
