WEEDSPORT - Can two-time champion Sharon Shoemaker (2000-2001) win her third masters crown and tie Shirley Tenity for the second most Women's Citizen Masters titles ever?
The remaining finalists left to compete this final weekend in the 2005 Citizen Masters (missing from photo are Tom Knapp and Charlie Guzewicz). Back row: Bill Kuszaj, Jeff Lumb, Jeff Matty, Jerry Locastro, Mike Ryan and Cory Slater. Middle row: Ann Crowley, Sandy Vertz, Mary Eastman, Cathy Streeter and Colleen Slater. Front row: Sharon Shoemaker, Sally Walker, K.C. Lorey. Jason Rearick / The Citizen
Can either Mike Ryan or Sandy Vertz defend their Citizen Masters titles in dramatic fashion by winning six matches in a row this weekend over a two-day span in two different centers?

Can former runner-ups Sally Walker (1999 & 2002), Cathy Streeter (1986), Tom Knapp (1994), or Bill Kuszaj (1989) finally grab that first masters title that has eluded them in the past?

Can Jeff Matty, Cory Slater, Charile Guzewicz, Jerry Locastro, and Jeff Lumb for the men or Ann Crowley, Mary Eastman, K.C. Lorey, and Colleen Slater for the women add their names to the list of Citizen Masters champions by winning their first title?

These questions will be answered when the eight finalists in both the Men's and Women's Citizen Masters Tournaments start at noon on Saturday at Rainbow Lanes in Weedsport.

For the eight finalists in the winner's bracket, the march to a Citizen Masters title will be much easier, as six of them (three men and three women) currently in the winner's bracket are guaranteed to make it to the final four on Sunday at the Polish Falcon Lanes in Auburn.

For the eight finalists in the loser's bracket, it will be much more difficult to capture the crown as only two finalists (one man and one woman) are guaranteed to get to Sunday and it will be sudden death as they would have to win six straight matches in order to take home the trophy.

Three out of four bowlers currently in the winner's bracket will make it to Sunday with two still unbeaten and one in the loser's bracket. Three out of the four bowlers currently in the loser's bracket will be eliminated after Saturday's matches with just one making it to Sunday.

All bowlers will bowl at Rainbow Lanes at noon both winner's bracket and loser's bracket. The winners from the loser's bracket matches at noon and the losers from the winner's bracket matches at noon will square off again at 1:30 p.m.

The finals will start on Sunday at noon at the Polish Falcon Lanes and will continue until the two champions and two runners-up are crowned in the last match of each tournament.

Knapp and Vertz are the only left-handers amongst the finalists this year. Cory Slater (24) is the youngest finalist and Kuszaj (58) is the oldest finalist for the men, while Vertz (33) is the youngest finalist and Mary Eastman (51) is the oldest finalist for the women.

Cory Slater (223 average) for the men and Shoemaker (216 average) for the women are currently leading for the George Vitetta Memorial award and the Joe "Bomber" Vitetta Memorial award, respectively.

Walker is currently leading with 743 for the high series for the women and Cory Slater has the high series so far for the men with 763.

Colleen Slater was the high qualifier for the women with 683 while Jeff Furman and Greg Hypes were the two high qualifiers for the men with 735 and 717, respectively.

Knapp, Kuszaj, Matty, and Cory Slater are undefeated in the winner's bracket for the men while Ryan, Guzewicz, Locastro, and Lumb are in the loser's bracket with one loss each.

Crowley, Walker, Eastman, and Shoemaker are unbeaten in the winner's bracket for the women while Streeter, Lorey, Vertz, and Colleen Slater are sitting in the loser's bracket.

For the men in the loser's bracket at noon at Rainbow Lanes on Saturday it will be Ryan vs. Guzewicz and Locastro vs. Lumb while in the winner's bracket it will be Knapp vs. Kuszaj and Matty vs. Cory Slater.

For the women in the loser's bracket it will be Streeter vs. Lorey and Vertz vs. Colleen Slater while in the winner's bracket it will be Crowley vs. Walker and Eastman vs. Shoemaker.

The men will be shooting for the Ted "Baldy" Skowron memorial Trophy and a $500 first prize for the champion and the Joe Catalfano, Sr. Memorial Trophy and a $250 second prize for the runner-up.

The women will be gunning for the Helen Dudek Championship Trophy for the champion and the Izzie Gentilcore Memorial Trophy for the runner-up.

Will a Masters veteran win this year or will a new face come out of the pack to claim victory and earn their place in Citizen Masters history? Only time will tell after the balls stop rolling and the pins stop falling in the final match on Sunday at the Polish Falcon Lanes.
