AUBURN - Mr. John J. Rogers, 82, a former resident of Kearney Avenue, Auburn, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Auburn Nursing Home.
A lifelong Auburnian, he was born Sept. 26, 1922, the son of Philip and Catherine Rogers. He was a member of Holy Family Church and a graduate of Holy Family High School with the Class of 1940. He entered the Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained on Christmas Eve 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge.
He retired from the New York state Department of Corrections in 1977, with 30 years of employment, serving in Auburn, Attica and Elmira. His wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Woods Rogers, whom he married Feb. 19, 1944, in Holy Family Church, predeceased him on Dec. 25, 1999.
Surviving are their children: Philip J. Rogers (Lorraine) of Auburn, Suzanne Hutton (Marlin) of Weedsport and Jane E. Rogers of Liverpool; four grandchildren, Katherine Hutton and her fiance, Brian Locke, Matthew Hutton and Jessica and Christopher Rogers; two sisters, Helen (Joseph) Graney of Auburn and Dorothy Bowen of Fleming; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He also was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth Kelly and Sister Mary Ambrose, RSM.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, in Holy Family Church, with the Rev. James Burke, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Farrell's Funeral Service Inc., 84 South St., Auburn.
Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Church, 85 North St., Auburn.
