St. Alphonsus hosts bottle, can drive
The St. Alphonsus CYO bottle and can drive is taking place from 9 a.m. to noon today to benefit youth cheerleading and basketball programs.
People can drop off their cans and bottles at the gym at 89 E. Genesee St. If you can't make it out, the church will pick them up for you. Just call the rectory at 252-7261. Bottles are also being collected for St. Alphonsus CYO all year long at the Frosted Nickel, 28 Clark St.
Fair Haven master plan on agenda
The village board of Fair Haven will hold a public hearing at its next meeting to consider adopting a master plan for the village.
The meeting will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, in the Village Hall meeting room at 14523 Cayuga St.
Auburnian arrested for bank forgery
An Auburn man was arrested Friday for forging his father's signature on bank withdrawal slips and stealing a total of $910 from his father's savings account.
James E. Davis Jr., 43, of 11 Sherwood St., Auburn, was charged by the Auburn Police Department with a felony charge of second-degree forgery.
Davis, whose occupation is listed as a laborer, was also arraigned in Albany City Court Friday morning.
Boehlert nominates students to academy
U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert has nominated four local high school seniors for admission to U.S. service academies this fall.
Holly Ann Giacolone, of Weedsport High School, has been nominated to the U.S. Navel Academy in Annapolis. Derek Powers, a senior at Moravia, was nominated to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, along with Auburn High School students Andrew Kott and Carl Mark Festa Jr.
Students are selected for nomination after recommendations are reviewed by Boehlert's Service Academy Advisory Committee. Boehlert then selects students to compete for academy appointments based on whom the committee deems qualified. Final appointments are determined by the academies, selecting from a nationwide list of nominees.
Boehlert announces $52k planning grant
Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, R-New Hartford, has announced $52,000 in federal funding for the Central New York Planning and Development Board through the Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration. This is a continuation of funds that will comprise one-quarter of the agency's annual budget.
The board works to help address some of the most significant issues facing the Central New York region. The board's five counties include Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties.
Send soldiers a video greeting
Area residents can send a two-minute video message to loved ones serving in the military and stationed around the globe.
Through the Cayuga County Red Cross chapter, the video message will be taped and electronically forwarded through e-mail to military personnel.
Contact the Red Cross to make an appointment at 252-9596.
Appointments are available from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 12; from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 13 through Sat., Jan. 15; and from 3 to 5 p.m. Sun, Jan. 16.
Appointments are made for 15-minute intervals, and the Red Cross is asking for arrival of 15 minutes prior to the appointments.
