They're said to be hard working and persistent, but all their efforts can create all sorts of problems for humans.
So it is with a group of beavers in the town of Mentz.
A beaver dam on railroad-owned land off Berger Road, east of High Bridge Road, is believed to have blocked up a small watercourse, causing flooding which has spilled over onto the road and neighboring properties.
Town Supervisor Jack O'Neill said the town closed off a section of the road Friday, but the problem has been welling up for some time.
"We've been after the railroad to get this taken care of for several months," O'Neill said.
Significant rains in recent days led to several inches of floodwater covering a stretch of road roughly 50 yards long and into people's yards.
O'Neill said he's heard reports that the flooding could be affecting some homeowners' septic systems.
While O'Neill said he saw pumps out at the flooding site Monday, he has concerns about how long it could take to siphon off "several acres of water," let alone getting the underlying cause addressed.
"We're letting the attorney handle it," O'Neill said, explaining that the town attorney has been asked to send a letter to CSX.
