County ponders $93M budget

Cayuga County residents will have their chance to weigh in on the tentative $93 million budget for 2005 at a hearing Tuesday night.
The spending plan carries a 4-percent tax levy increase, well below the 20-percent increase the county endured with the 2004 budget. County leaders have credited tight controls on spending, along with some added revenues that included extra sales tax created in part by the opening of Bass Pro Shops.

Tuesday's hearing starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Cayuga County Legislature Chambers at the county office building on Genesee Street.

The Legislature unanimously passed the tentative budget Nov. 8. It may vote to make the budget final following Tuesday's hearing.

It is possible that some changes to the budget could be made before final adoption, including any recommendations that come out of tonight's meeting of the Legislature's Ways and Means Committee.

One unresolved cut in the budget is an assistant district attorney position - the only occupied job cut from Legislature Chairman Herb Marshall's proposed 2005 budget.

District Attorney James Vargason was unable to attend the Nov. 8 Legislature meeting, but Marshall said the item could come up for discussion as long as it had a specific cost and line item attached to it.
