A man who aimed his gun at an Auburn police officer was apprehended Sunday afternoon at the Owasco Outlet.
Jason C. Abron, 30, was arrested after he tried to elude police by swimming across the Owasco Outlet behind B&B Automotive in Auburn. While running from Officer John Dixon between the houses at 27 and 29 Derby St., Abron reportedly pulled out a loaded .45 automatic and turned back and pointed the weapon at Dixon.
Dixon shouted to Abron to drop the weapon, and Abron tossed the gun over a backyard fence and continued heading toward the outlet.
Abron struggled to swim across the outlet, and was apprehended by officers waiting on the south bank.
Abron, whose last known address was in Geneva, was charged with second-degree menacing and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, which is a felony because Abron is a previously convicted felon.
Auburn police had responded to a road rage call with possible weapon at 2:58 p.m. Sunday at Wall and Washington streets. Although there was no one at the scene, a description of a white Honda and license plate number was sent out to all units.
The Honda was spotted by police shortly after on Clark Street, and officers pulled the vehicle over on West Street. Both men inside the vehicle jumped out of the car, and the passenger took off on foot.
The driver, Abron, returned to the vehicle and drove away. Two police units pursued the Honda until it stopped on Derby Street, and Abron got out of the vehicle and tried to escape on foot by running between two of the homes.
Abron's weapon has been recovered and he is currently being held in Cayuga County Jail. The passenger in the car is still being sought by police.
