Lake House vote postponed again

AURORA - Residents around the Lake House Apartments in Aurora are again left waiting on the building's fate.
The village's Community Preservation Panel was scheduled to decide whether to grant a Certificate of Appropriateness for the building's demolition at Wednesday night's meeting. But it further postponed its vote on demolishing the building, citing the advice of the village's attorney, Andrew Fusco.

The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the village firehouse on Route 90.

This is not the first time a decision on the demolition has been tabled by CPP.

At its Sept. 1 meeting, the Aurora Foundation, who applied for the demolition, requested more time to look through public comments the village received about the plans.

CPP Chair Avery Ayers vowed Wednesday that a decision would be made next week on whether the building will be demolished.

The CPP and the village Planning Board met with Fusco before the meeting to discuss whether the demolition would require an environmental impact assessment. Planning Board Chair Nancy Gil said Fusco will be at next week's meeting to fill out environmental impact paperwork if necessary.

There was confusion as to whether the demolition required such an assessment.

Lake House Apartments is a four-unit complex overlooking Cayuga Lake. The Aurora Foundation, a partnership between Wells College and the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation, wants the apartment building demolished to make room for the Webb House.

The foundation purchased the Webb House to prevent its demolition.

Aurora residents have voiced concerns over the preservation of both of these historic landmarks, as well as the future of affordable housing in their community.

Some residents have been attending the CPP's meetings for several months hoping for some kind of resolution.

Many felt jerked around by the board's postponing a vote.

"If the vote keeps getting postponed and no one knows when it will be decided, no one will be there on that important date," said Aurora resident Grace Bates.
