AUBURN - Cordelia Elizabeth Carter (Roundtree Kennedy), 96, formerly of 22 Parker St., Auburn, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Rochester General Hospital.

A native of Rochester, Cordelia was a graduate of Mynderse Academy of Seneca Falls. She then attended The New England Conservatory in Boston to continue her music education. She came to Auburn in 1926 for a two-week vacation, where she met and married her late husband Reginald Carter, who died in 1983. She lived in Auburn until she was 91 years of age.

Cordelia was an accomplished organist and pianist, beginning her career at the age of 8 years old. She learned to play the pipe organ at the age of 90, at the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church in Auburn. During her lifetime, she had performed several musical concerts. At the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, she was president of the Stewardesses Board, church treasurer, member of the Church Women United of Auburn, board member of Booker T. Washington Community Center, secretary of the Harriet Tubman Music Boosters Club, and a member of the IBPOE of West Syracuse, Cayadetta Temple.

The honors and awards that she has received are the naming of the Fellowship Hall in her honor at her church, NAACP Hall of Fame, Dedicated Service Award by the Cayuga-Tompkins District of the Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York and the Community of Color Award of Distinction by the Kaleidoscope Dance Theater.

She is survived by one son, David S. Carter of The Bronx; three daughters, Marilyn Frender of New York City, and Anita Mitchell and Dorothy Berryhill and her husband Jerry, all of Rochester; two daughters-in-law, Luceda and Brenda; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one nephew, James Mebane.

Mrs. Carter was predeceased this year by a son, Richard.

Services will be conducted at noon Saturday, in the Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, at the corner of Washington and Wall streets, Auburn. Viewing will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, and from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Carter had an unending love for her family, deep devotion for her church, and the greatest passion for music that consumed her life.

Arrangements are by Cheche Funeral Home of Auburn.
