Fate of Lake House Apartment put on hold

AURORA - Lake House Apartments in Aurora is safe from demolition, at least for another month.
The village's Community Preservation Panel chose not to vote on the demolition at the request of the Aurora Foundation, a partnership between Wells College and the Pleasant T. Rowland Foundation.

The Aurora Foundation's Executive Director Catharine Waller asked that she have more time to consider the scores of public comment she and the village have received regarding the proposed demolition.

Waller asked for copies of the public comments on Aug. 19, but did not receive all of it in time to prepare for Wednesday night's CPP meeting.

"It was probably just an oversight," she said. "I want to read it all, and I will respond."

This decision does not set the foundation's plans behind, Waller said.

The fate of Lake House Apartments has been in flux for months. The four-unit complex overlooking Cayuga Lake is in danger of being demolished to provide space to relocate the Webb House.

The Aurora Foundation purchased the Webb House to prevent its demolition.

This plan has elicited concerns by Aurora residents over the preservation of a historic landmark, as well as the future of affordable housing in their community.

Avery Ayers, CPP chair, had no problem postponing a decision on the demolition application.

"We don't mind giving them all the time they need," he said. "We want everything to receive due consideration. If it takes longer, it takes longer."

But several residents who were at the meeting did mind that the decision was delayed. Aurora resident Bruce Bennett was among those who spoke out against the demolition at a previous village board meeting. He left the meeting frustrated by the non-action.

"I thought it would be decided by now," he said. "This is at least two months of postponement. There is no guarantee this is the last time."
