It's time to start thinking about the Cayuga County Women's District Golf Tournament again.
The championship begins Friday July 16 at Highland Park, and concludes Saturday July 17 at Auburn Golf and CC. Entry fee is $50 for the two days of golf, with a buffet served after play Saturday at Auburn. The entry deadline is July 12.

The tournament is open to any female member in good standing at a golf club in Cayuga County, or any county resident wishing to play. This is not a handicap tournament, as golfers are flighted on the second day according to first day scores.

You can call Diane Webster at 252-3994, or Sue Cunliffe at 253-4333 for further information, or pick up an application form at any local pro shop. With the increase in new golfers, numbers should be up to traditional levels for this year's event. There is nothing better for the spirit than a couple rounds of competitive golf, just you against the golf course. Get your application in soon.

Big Match At

Dutch Hollow

Denny Samara and Frank Ferraraccio were down by nine strokes at the turn in their match against Jimmy Tripiciano and George Spinelli this past Thursday afternoon. Denny hovered over a three-foot putt on the 18th hole after narrowly missing a birdie try.

All the players watched as the "Bear" poised himself to make the stroke. The ball went into the hole despite much good-natured harassment, and Denny and Frank won their comeback bid by two strokes. From what we understand it was a hard-fought match. Denny is the king of the comeback.

The United States Open

This is U.S. Open week. The greatest tournament of the year, because it is a true "open" event. Any golfer with the where-with-all to qualify can pay their fee and give it a try. While it may be one of the toughest tournaments to qualify for, it is still the greatest prize in golf.

This is Sunday, the tournament's final day. It is almost impossible to say who may be leading this afternoon. But one thing for certain is that it is being played on a great course down on Long Island, and that the last 18 holes will be memorable. Each shot has a lasting value, and the man who wins, as always, will certainly deserve the victory.

No questions this week, if you think of something, send it along to lombo@baldcom.net with all your musings, ideas, theories, tournament announcements, league or tourney results, or anything golf positive.

See you on the links!
