Online credit reports are safe

I would like to check my credit report. Is it safe to do this on-line? Also, I noticed there area lot of choices on the Internet. Which one or which group of 2 or 3 credit report companies do I pick? There are a few options costing anywhere from $25.00 to $35.00.
