AUBURN-Want to get rid of some old tires?
Head to the Natural Resource Center on County House Road Saturday.
Residents of Cayuga County can drop off old tires for 50 cents each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center, next to the county jail. The tires will be recycled, which officials said will help reduce the risk of fires and West Nile Virus.
Old tires are flammable and are often breeding ground for mosquitoes, which carry the virus.
Tires will be accepted whether they are on or off a rim, but they must be no larger than 36 inches in diameter.
No businesses are allowed to drop off tires, but households are allowed to drop off a maximum of 40 tires.
Sponsors of the tire round up are Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County and the Cayuga County Planning Department.
Businesses or farms with more than 40 tires can call the Cornell Cooperative Extension at 255-1183.
