Empire State Games' Central Region bowling qualifying will be held at Thunderbird Lanes in Syracuse on Sat. May 8 at 10 a.m. The Open division will hold qualifying on Sat. May 8 and the finals will be held on Sun. May 9. The Masters division qualifies on Sat. May 8 only.
There are two divisions, the Masters division is for bowlers 50-years and older who have not been a member of a professional bowlers group in the previous three years. The Open division is for any bowler who is not currently a member, nor been a member of a professional group in the past three years.

The Open division regional qualifying format will consist of all bowlers rolling six games on the first day.

The field will then cut to a maximum of 16 men and 16 women who will bowl an additional four games. Pinfall will be carried over from the first six games.

The field will then be cut to the top six men and six women (based on their 10-game totals) who will advance to the second day in a round robin match play format (total pins carried over and 30 pins bonus for each win) with a position round. The top three men and three women will form the regional team that will advance to the finals.

The Masters division regional qualifying format will consist of two three-game blocks. The top three men and women (based on their six-game totals) will form the regional team that will advance to the finals.

Competition is open to all permanent residents of New York. Bowlers must compete in the region in which they reside or in the region they attend school if the regional competition is held while school is in session and their residence is in the same region as the school.

Bowlers may compete in only one region.

The top three male and three female bowlers from each regional competition and from each division advance to the Empire State Games to represent that region as a team.

At the Empire State Games both the Open and Masters divisions will compete in singles, mixed doubles, trios, and team competitions. The Open division also competes in an all-events competition. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded in each division in each event.

The Empire State Games regional qualifying and the finals (to be held at Midway Lanes in Vestal on July 28 through August 1) are sanctioned by ABC, WIBC, and YABA.

Competition is scratch with no handicap and all eligible bowlers must first compete in regional competition before advancing to the E.S.G. bowling competition.

Lou and Diane Bower are the coordinators for the Central Region.

They can be contacted by mail at 477 Veteran Hill Road, Horseheads, N.Y. 14845 or by e-mail at Di0225and@aol.com. The deadline to enter regional qualifying is 10 days prior to the competition, however walk-ins can be accepted prior to the start of competition only if lanes are available.

Bowlers can make checks payable to the Empire State Games and mail them to the respective coordinators.

Entry blanks can be found at area bowling centers or can be requested by writing to the regional coordinators by regular mail or e-mail.

The Central region consists of persons residing in the counties of Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins.
