FLUSHING - The Auburn YMCA girls gymnastics team won at the state championship meet last weekend.
The Auburn girls' combined scores earned them first place in New York. Auburn beat out Flushing, Cortland, Corning, Northwest, Rye and Saratoga Springs to bring home the championship.
Auburn's Molly McConnell competed in the level 4 child division against 11 competitors. McConnell was crowned state champion on beam posting a 9.0, on bars (9.30) and vault (9.30) and was second in the state on the floor exercise (8.80). McConnell posted an overall score of 36.40 making her the level 4 child division state all-around champion.
Kaela Fiutak, 9, of Skaneateles was among 11 other gymnasts in the level 4 jr. division and earned championship honors as well. Fiutak was named champion in all four events.
On beam she posted a 9.2, on bars 8.7, floor exercise 9.0 and on the vault a 9.35. Fiutak posted an all-around score of 36.25 earning her the level 4 jr. division state all-around championship.
Danielle Lust, Jessica Fromel and Michele Donahue competed in the level 4 sr. division against 12 competitors. Auburn gymnasts were among the top in each event.
Lust, 10, of Locke, was named state balance beam champion posting a 9.20. Lust posted a 9.40 for second place in the state on the vault, third place on the floor exercise (8.65) and fifth place on the bars (9.0). Lust earned second in the state all-around competition (36.25), only .05 short of the first-place finisher.
Fromel, 12, of Auburn took third place in the state all-around with an overall score of 36.0. Fromel also took second on the bars (9.4), third on the balance beam (9.0) and sixth on the vault (9.10). Fromel finished with a 8.5 on the floor exercise.
Michele Donahue, 12, of Weedsport earned fourth place in the state all-around (35.25). Donahue also earned fifth on the balance beam (8.80), and sixth place on the bars (8.90), floor exercise (8.55) and vault (9.0).
Team captain Kasey Holbrook, 12, from Marcellus was named state all-around champion for the level 5 jr. division (34.35). Holbrook was also named state bars champion (8.7), and floor exercise Champion (9.0). Holbrook also earned third on the balance beam (8.35) and fourth on the vault (8.30).
