Well, this is it for the 2003-2004 cheerleading season column. But there are still a few all-stars championship competitions.
USA Fusion just got back from the COA Tournament in New Jersey last weekend. Senior members placed first in the senior prep division, Auburnians Allie LeoGrande, Victoria Calarco, and Brittany Babcock had a great time. The junior squad, with Auburnians, Kristen Long, and CJ Murphy placed third in its division. To CJ, I am sorry that your name was omitted in the last few columns that had news of USA Fusion, please forgive me.

They are going to compete at American Cheer Power National Competition, in Columbus, Ohio on April 3-4. This is a two day competition that they qualified for at the competition in Hershey Pa., last year.

They will finish their season at Hershey on Mother's Day weekend. In the meantime you can see Fusion at the Fingerlakes Mall, April 16 from 6-9 p.m., at Shoppingtown Mall - Dewitt - April 23 from 6-9 p.m., at Carousel Mall - Syracuse, April 30 from 6-9 p.m., and at Great Northern Mall) Clay, May 14, also from 6-9 p.m.

There will be an Open House on May 12 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at the Maria Regina Center (Wilson Convent Building) 1118A Court St Syracuse. Try-outs will be May 19 grades 1-4 6-8 p.m, May 20 grades 5-7 6-8:30 p.m., May 21 grades 8-12 6-8:30 p.m., and May 22 grades 8-12 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

If anyone is interested in the program they can call the gym at 423-7005 or e-mail cheerfuzion@yahoo.com

Auburn CYO had closing day last Sunday at Auburn High School.

There were four divisions, mascots from St. Mary's, St. Francis, and St. Alphonsus, Instructional, add Sacred Heart to the list, 6th grade add St. Hyacinth's and Sacred Heart and just one combination team from Holy Family.

The Father Pat Sullivan Cheerleading Award winner was Nora Bachman from Holy Family Parish. Every squad performed an exhibition before the presentation of awards. All of the girls were in fine form and although I did not attend (just wasn't feeling well Sunday afternoon) Mary Emerson was kind enough to give me the info. Thank you very much Mary.

I did hear some comments that the day would have been much more exciting if the cheerleaders could have competed as they used too. With liability issues and lack of practice space, CYO Cheerleading has been reduced to more of a dance recital and it's really not fair to take the opportunity of competing that one time away from them.

So, how about it? I said that last year too, the cheerleaders cheer at every game, practice two to three times a week and it would be nice to give them a chance to compete.

Don't get me wrong, each squad received a trophy, but you could award everyone a participation ribbon or medal, let them compete and give trophies to the top two in each division if there are at least four squads participating.

Or let them compete to a score as they should there be only one or two teams in a division. Bottom line, the amount of talent displayed by these young ladies and their coaches just goes to show how this "sporting activity" is alive and well within the Auburn Catholic Youth Organization, and it would be nice to bring back the competition.

Pop Warner will be holding sign ups for the 2004-2005 season in June. Look for more information in this paper under the Out and About in The Citizen.

In conclusion, I want to thank everyone for their kind words and support about this column and a big thank you to everyone that took the time to share information.

It's been over 10 years since I was introduced to cheerleading via Auburn Pop Warner. In that time I have seen amazing growth within the community for every level of cheerleading. All-stars, CYO, Pop Warner, recreation squads, high school junior varsity and varsity. I do believe in playing the sport but if you choose not to play, than cheer for the sport, be safe and have fun.

For all you aspiring cheerleaders, check out the cheerleading camps, go as an individual or as a group, keep in shape this summer, swim, bike, skate, run, do yoga, pick any form of exercise, make it a part of your day and all will be well for your mind and body.

For all you veteran coaches and you new coaches, there are clinics to sign up for, I recommend visiting www.cyncheer.com because there is one coming up this June. One of the most important steps in coaching successfully is to be knowledgeable on current safety rules and new techniques.

Remember to teach the basics and always work on conditioning before you attempt the more difficult stunts. I saw the NCA Cheerleading Championships on ESPN recently, the level of difficulty was amazing, the quality of routines innovative and the tumbling top level. These cheerleaders had to start with the basics, keep the cheerleaders safe, teach basics and safety first, follow the correct progression of difficulty and most of all have fun.

Talk way later, like, in September.
