HORNELL - Jean (Sweeney) Dineen, 80, formerly of Hornell, died peacefully Monday afternoon, March 8, 2004, surrounded by her family.
Born in Hornell on July 19, 1923, she was a daughter of the late J. Gerald and Anna Saxton Sweeney. On Jan. 28, 1951, she was married in St. Ann's Church in Hornell, to her beloved husband, John K. Dineen, who predeceased her March 28, 1996, after 45 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Hornell, Jean was a graduate of Hornell High School, Class of 1942. She was employed at the former Erie Railroad Accounting Bureau and the former Sears & Roebuck Co. store in Hornell. Jean was a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, a member of the Ladies of Columbus and the St. James Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She also served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Her family includes her four children: Joanne (Mark) Henchen of Rochester, Robert J. Dineen of Macedon, David (Debi) Dineen of Cayuga and Mary (David) Elovich of West Hartford, Conn; her two brothers, John G. (Marsha) Sweeney of Phelps and J. Richard Sweeney of Silver Springs, Md.; her sister, Ellen Sengstock of Hornell; also her nieces and nephews, including her very special niece, Sandra (Roger) Schulitz of Hornell.
She was a loving grandmother to David, John and Karen Henchen, Elisabeth, Katie, Michael, Maria, Christiana, Emily and Evangelina Dineen, and Rebekah, Hannah and Alivia Elovich.
Besides her parents and husband, Jean was predeceased by her sister, Martha Dunning; and her brother, Robert A. Sweeney.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell, where the Ladies of Columbus will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m. Thursday. Friends are invited to meet her family, at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Hornell.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in Jean's memory to either the Alzheimer's Association, 435 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY 14620 (envelopes will be available at the funeral home); or to a charity of the donor's choice.
