AUBURN - A local musician - who was the drummer for one of the community's most well-known rock bands - was arrested Friday for possessing child pornography.
Kevin A. Shwaryk, 54, of 17 Morris St., was arrested after Cayuga County Sheriff's Department investigators executed a search warrant for his home. He was charged with one count of possession of an obscene sexual performance by a child, a felony.
During the early 1970s, Shwaryk was a drummer with Jukin' Bone, a rock band that signed with RCA Records. The band released two records before breaking up.
On Friday night, investigators confiscated a truckload of items, including videotapes, a computer and photographs, said Sheriff Rob Outhouse. At least one photo containing child pornography was taken from Shwaryk's home.
The sheriff's department was acting on a tip. The sheriff wouldn't identify the source, only that "it was fresh information" that initiated the investigation, he said.
Investigators will sift through the items to determine if there are other pornographic items and to see whether to bring additional charges.
The investigation was described by Outhouse as "on-going."
"It's prohibitive by law to have child pornography, and we want to determine whether it goes deeper than that," Outhouse said.
The sheriff's department released a photo of Shwaryk to determine if the public recognized him.
Investigators want to see if anyone would come forward with more information or to determine whether there are local victims, Outhouse said.
Shwaryk was arraigned in Sennett Town Court by Justice Florence Riley.
He was committed to Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash and $20,000 secured bond. He was scheduled to appear in Auburn City Court Monday.
Shwaryk gave up his musical career years ago.
Most recently, he was working as a night auditor at the local Days Inn but was laid off last fall after new owners took over.
