AUBURN - The fourth annual Family Fun event, set for this afternoon at Cayuga Community College, could use another word in its name that begins with the letter F.
It could be called the Free Family Fun event.
After some discussion about whether a modest admission fee should be charged this year, the organizing committee decided against a change.
"We managed, between the co-sponsors, to do it again for free," said Elizabeth Hurley, director of the college's alumni association, one of the co-sponsors. "If we can continue to do that will have to be seen. But, hopefully, we can because our main goal is to make it possible for every family to be able to come, regardless of what their income is. I mean, there are families that can't even afford a small amount of money, and we just wanted to make it for the whole community."
It features animal mask making, a clown and magic show, the Cayuga County Highland Search-and-Rescue team, balloon animals, a book sale, face painting, the return of Clifford the Big Red Dog, a moon walk and other games.
"It started four years ago. We had a big series of events under the title, 'Teaching Peace,'" said Hurley.
That first day was largely put together by the city's Social Justice Task Force. "It was so well attended, and it was so well received in the community, that we decided to do it again the year after. And now it's become a tradition," Hurley said.
More than 500 people visited the event last year.
But along with increasing attendance came the realization the ground-level cafeteria was just too small a space to keep the fun flowing freely. So, this year it will be held in the much larger Spartan Hall gymnasium.
"We don't have enough room anywhere else to accommodate all these people," Hurley said.
Co-sponsors for the Family Fun event are the ACC/CCC Alumni Association, the CCC Student Activities Board, Success by Six and WCNY, the public television station in Syracuse.
The event combines both fun and education.
Success by Six is bringing The Mighty Molar, an oversized tooth that spreads the word on proper dental care for infants.
