Aburn City Council was given a great show last Thursday evening by Falconer Mark Westman.
Westman talked about the possibility of using attack mode to move the crows out of the city.
While Westman made an interesting presentation, the council needs to explore all options relating to the crows.
Last year the council created an ad-hoc committee, led by Councilor Thomas McNabb, to look at the issue and see how to best deal with it.
The committee was given $10,000 and has held a few meetings, with no great proposal to come forward.
Mayor Lattimore had said during his campaign that he would explore options for ridding the city of the crows.
He has begun to make good on the promise.
While Lattimore should be applauded for bringing the presentation forward, he shouldn't ignore the fact that a committee has been set to make suggestions.
The $10,000 allocation doesn't seem to be a small number, but the council must be sure that it has all of the options before deciding how to spend it.
Everyone has their own ideas on how to deal with crows.
Many say leave them alone.
Many want them removed in the most humane manner possible.
And yes, there are some residents that don't care if they are "blown" out of Auburn.
There are "pro-crow" advocates on the committee that are against Auburn's "Crow Shoot." These members should realize that if they find a way to move the population of crows, there would be no need for a "hunt."
The council needs to look at what other communities have done to rid their cities of the same crow issues that we have.
We need to be sure that if we are talking removal, we are using a tried and true way of doing so.
Falconer Westman was very clear in stating that the crows may return after his planned attack.
He further stated that this would be the first time he worked with a municipality to try his plan.
With that, the council needs to realize that we can't undertake a $10,000 experiment. They need to be sure that we won't be addressing this issue again in a year.
McNabb said, after Thursday's meeting, that the committee will soon come out with some recommendations.
We're waiting councilor and the clock is ticking.
