The calls started coming in at about 3 p.m.
"You said the game would be on Channel 6, and I have it on Channel 6 and all I see are the same old announcements," said the callers, who were in various stages of frustration.
Earlier in the week, we had published an Adelphia press release in which the Auburn cable company had announced it would be broadcasting that afternoon's Syracuse University game on Channel 6. But the only thing on Channel 6 that day was a Boy Scout pancake breakfast ... no, wait ... yoga classes ... no ... dog grooming ...
When it comes to the information published, a newspaper is sometimes the source, sometimes the messenger. But we understand we're often held accountable regardless. So Adelphia's snafu with their satellites that Saturday afternoon became a problem for our credibility in the community as well.
Which is why, with some wariness, we introduced expanded weather forecasts last week. Now, instead of the somewhat broad "Cloudy, 25" forecasts we previously printed, we are running more detailed information so that you can plan your day and week.
Which leads to the wariness. We are publishing forecasts which come from the National Weather Service. They are accurate much of the time, but we know the unpredictability of weather coupled with the fallibility of meteorologists will no doubt lead to forecasts which are a bit, how shall we say, off.
And so, much like with Adelphia this month, we understand inaccurate weather forecasts can also reflect poorly on the newspaper in which it's published.
Hmmmm ... perhaps there's something to be said for being vague and running "Cold, chance of snow" as the forecast every day from November to March, just so we're 100% accurate.
These expanded forecasts aren't the only thing we're pleased to announce:
Due to its popularity, we are adding a second day of the week for Cloud Catchers drawings. Now, local weather art from readers will be published on Mondays and Tuesdays.
We asked you which new comic we should add on Sundays, and the majority of callers (included those from Auburn Memorial Hospital) voted for Get Fuzzy. The strip is one of the most popular in the country, and will be added to our Sunday comics in March.
We are now consistently running an additional letters page on Sundays. This provides more opportunities for our readers to express their opinion, and it gives us a chance to get more letters published in a timely fashion.
As we continue adding more local content, Auburn's Paul Luziani will be joining our stable of editorial page columnists. Luziani's opinions on local issues (crows, Owasco speed limits, etc...) are often apolitical and always entertaining. His refreshingly different take on issues and life in Cayuga County begins Thursday.
We hope you enjoy the new additions, especially the expanded weather forecast.
And on those summer days when you are shivering on a park bench at Emerson Park, freezing your legs off because you wore shorts based on the forecast you read in The Citizen, please take a moment before calling us to complain.
Look down at the next park bench. We'll be sitting there, frustrated and freezing as well.
