Grant Avenue looks sharper with the new Metro Mattress, at the corner of McIntosh Drive and Grant Avenue, with the many neon signs for various mattress companies that line the all-glass exterior.
Metro Mattress is in the former home of Lum's restaurant, and most recently the discount retailer Pricebreakers, which is now at the Grant Avenue Plaza near the Movieplex 10. Both sites are owned by developer Michael Wachs.
Sales Associate Kim Biglarderi, who can be seen on the frequently-run Metro Mattress ad wearing a brown suit, said "business has been very good" since they opened Aug. 28.
The Central New Labor Federation honored George Farenthold of Aurora, and the Adelphia Teamsters, on Labor Day at the New York State Fair.
Farenthold, the son of former Wells College President Cissy Farenthold, was recognized as Activist of the Year. A member of the Office and Professional Employees Local 227, Farenthold has been a strong supporter of the Adelphia Teamsters who have been on strike since June 10.
"There are those who talk, and those who do. George does it and wants to do more," said Baschki Leo of Ithaca, president of the Cayuga County Labor Council and a teacher at Seward Elementary School in Auburn.
The Struggle of the Year honor went to the Adelphia Teamsters. Of the 13 union members who continue to walk the picket line each day, Leo said "these workers are taking on the Goliath of corporations."
More than $950 was raised for the Teamsters at the luncheon.
Remember the organic milk processing facility that was looking at the industrial park owned by Cayuga County in Aurelius?
It won't be happening. The company, Amish Country Farms, had strained relations with some dairies in the southern end of Cayuga County, but that isn't what killed the deal. The firm just never got back in touch with the Cayuga County Industrial Development Agency after making several initial inquiries.
For at least the last 12 years, high schoolers from the Auburn track and cross-country teams have helped the county's Board of Elections answer phones and tabulate results. They were back Tuesday in the basement of the County Office Building, with coach Al Wilson in charge.
Cayuga County Elections Commissioner Dick Paulino praised the teenagers for their involvement and level of commitment.
Also, I made a mistake in a story that ran Wednesday on the county clerk's race. Sheriff Rob Outhouse was involved in a county-wide primary in 1991, but it was not against former Sheriff Peter Pinckney. Outhouse defeated Dick Noga in the Republican primary.
