HIT: To Cato-Meridians Josh Warner, whose hard work brings him to a new level this weekend when he gets to suit up for the Chicago Bears. Warner, who played for Division III Brockport State, has been kicking around on NFL teams practice squads and last week was cut from the Green Bay Packers. But he joined the Bears practice squad and now, with the Bears reeling from so many late-season injuries, gets to suit up on game day against the Carolina Panthers. The Bears have given him a two-year contract. Warner is much like the many seldom-seen players clambering for that chance at the big time but falling just short. We wish him well.
MISS: To Richard Harcrow, president of the New York State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association, for his reckless comments Tuesday. Commenting on the Auburn Prison lockdown, Harcrow told an Associated Press reporter that an HIV-positive inmate had bitten a corrections officer. In truth, Harcrow had no way of knowing the prisoner was HIV-positive. The next day Harcrow told The Citizen that he meant to say the prisoner might have well have had HIV because the standard medical response assumes all inmates have HIV. Harcrow shouldnt be complaining about being misquoted. He was careless.
HIT: To the snowmobile clubs doing the grunt work in blazing and maintaining trails. In Cayuga County, fewer than 25 percent of the countys 2,500-plus registered snowmobile users belong to the clubs, which arrange the labor to benefit many riders. For instance, the Weedsport Winter Wanderers this year repaired a 90-foot suspension bridge over Putnam Creek. Active members wanted, declared Dave Samons, the Wanderers treasurer, at a meeting Wednesday. Were looking for all the people to do their share.
MISS: To Auburn prison inmate Jerome Williams for throwing bodily waste at a corrections officer and HIT to the consequences he was given. Williams, 38, added 7 1/2 to 15 years to his sentence because of his three counts of aggravated harassment. It took a jury less than 30 minutes to conclude Williams had thrown urine and feces on March 15, 2001.
