AUBURN Tom Hussey takes art lovers on a trip Down the Road.
Recent work by the Auburn artist is on view at the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce through Dec. 31 in the exhibit lobby at 36 South St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Husseys exhibit is titled Down the Road: Paintings of Central New York. After years of using watercolors and acrylics as a sketching tool to develop oil paintings, Hussey now incorporates those mediums into his repertoire of finished works.
As a Northeastern landscape painter, Im fascinated with the range of textures and tones in our regions terrain and weather, Hussey said.
Down the Road is a two-sided theme, according to Hussey. The subject matter is of regional scenes accessible by a short drive, he said. Painting is a journey of discovery, both of the world one perceives and of oneself. Trusting your instincts is important. Hussey said his view of the Central New York area is always changing, but always inspiring. As a landscape painter, I see that our areas views are not only inspiring, but are constantly changing, he said. I am fortunate to be able to live the life I once dreamed of. Husseys favorite art medium to work with is oils. I started painting in oils when I was 12, he said. They still hold magic for me at age 49. Painting in watercolors and acrylics opens up different challenges and rewards, which can influence the way I approach an oil painting. Oils offer a rich vocabulary of color, tone and texture most suited for what I want to express. Hussey has many places where he likes to paint. My favorite spot to paint is any place I get to paint on a given day, he said. I often get in the car and head down the road with only a vague destination in mind. Discovering new views is part of the fun. His most recent paintings have been inspired at the Cayuga Community College.
Ive painted more scenes at the Cayuga Community College nature center in recent years than anywhere else, he said. So that qualifies as a favorite. Recently Hussey created a new painting for the Auburn Downtown Partnerships 2003 brochure with a view looking up East Hill in Auburn.
In addition to serving on the board of directors for the Cayuga County Arts Council and the City of Auburn Cultural and Historic Sites Commission, Hussey is an active member of the Skaneateles-Marcellus Art Guild and the Seneca County, Scoharie County and Saratoga County arts councils. He is also showing with the Allied Artists at Art Mart in the Syracuse City Hall commons, 201 Washington St., Syracuse, through Dec. 24. He will exhibit at the Saratoga County Arts Council Members Exhibition Hall in January and February.
Involvement with the Cayuga County Arts Council has allowed Hussey the chance to meet and appreciate other area artists. I have a growing collection of original pieces from local artists that is a source of enjoyment and inspiration, he said. Its stimulating to work in an area with so much talent.
